Word Definition
Copyright

Copyright is a set of exclusive rights granted to the author or creator of an original work, including the right to copy, distribute and adapt the work. Copyright does not protect ideas, only their expression. In most jurisdictions copyright arises upon fixation and does not need to be registered. Copyright owners have the exclusive statutory right to exercise control over copying and other exploitation of their works for a specific period of time, after which the work is said to enter the public domain. Uses covered under limitations and exceptions to copyright, such as fair use, do not require permission from the copyright owner. More Information

Fair Use

Fair use, a limitation and exception to the exclusive right granted by copyright law to the author of a creative work, is a doctrine in common copyright law that allows limited use of copyrighted material without acquiring permission from the rights holders. Examples of fair use include commentary, criticism, news reporting, research, teaching, library archiving and scholarship. It provides for the legal, non-licensed citation or incorporation of copyrighted material in another authorís work under a four-factor balancing test. More Information

Hot-linking

Hot-linking is when someone uses a link to an image that is saved on another website/server instead of saving a copy of the image on the website that the picture will be published on. Hot-linking uses the bandwidth of the person who owns the website where the picture is stored. More Information
